On May 13-14, 2019, the Board of Directors of the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus (NBCCC) is meeting at Resurrection Catholic Missions. The NBCCC was founded in 1968 in response to several major changes in the Church and in the country. In its 51 years of existence, the Caucus – comprised of bishops, priests, deacons and vowed religious men – has worked fervently to promote the Catholic Church in the African American community and to advocate for African American Catholics in the broader Church.
The affiliate National Black Catholic Seminarians Association (NBCSA) has worked hand in hand with the NBCCC. In 1979, in collaboration with the National Black Sisters Conference (NBSC), the Caucus founded the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans. In the summer of 2018, the three organizations gathered in Joint Conference in the Archdiocese of New Orleans to praise and thank God for 50 years of service to the Church.
Following the untimely passing in December 2018 of board president Father Kenneth Taylor of Indianapolis, then NBCCC vice president Deacon Mel Tardy of the diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend/University of Notre Dame assumed the leadership of the Caucus. Attending the meeting in Montgomery are Deacons Leonard Chambliss and Jerry Lett of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, and Father Anthony Bozeman, SSJ, past president and pastor of St. Raymond-St. Leo Church in New Orleans, Louisiana.
We are delighted to host the NBCCC Board of Directors and hope they have a fruitful two days of meetings and fellowship.
