Resurrection Catholic Church parishioner and former Resurrection Catholic School student Zipporah “Zippy” Broughton was awarded the 2018 Jimmy Hitchcock Memorial Award Thursday.
Given in memory of multi-sport athlete Jimmy Hitchcock, the Britton YMCA-sponsored award recognizes Christian faith and leadership in athletics with a focus on attributes like character, effort, and dependability. Broughton, an avid Robert E. Lee High School athlete known for her skill in the sports of basketball and track and field, was selected out of more than 20 other young women athlete nominees from local private and public high schools.
Broughton (recently named 2018 Alabama Miss Basketball and 7A Player of the Year and a contender for valedictorian) is a rising star on the high school sports scene, but she’s also made quite a name for herself around Resurrection campus. An active member of the parish, she has been involved in the Resurrection Catholic Youth Council, is a junior daughter of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Peter Claver, and serves as lector and altar server during Masses.
In years past, Broughton has also assisted with Resurrection’s special needs children and adults. She also completed part of her grade school education at Resurrection Catholic School.
The staff and parishioners of Resurrection express great pride in Broughton’s win, believing that this is only the beginning for a young woman and athlete with her talent, skill, and integrity.
“Zipporah is an outstanding young believer,” Pastor and Mission Director Father Manuel Williams, C.R. said. “She is a scholar athlete, and certainly exemplifies all the values that the Hitchcock Award promotes. Her entire family have been integral members of this parish community since her childhood. Resurrection is extremely proud of her and her accomplishments.”
Broughton is the daughter of Resurrection Catholic School child nutrition staff member Jerome Broughton.
