The song says these are the lazy, hazy days of summer. For us here at Resurrection Catholic Missions summers are anything but lazy but surely they are hazy and hot! We have only completed a week or so in June and already the daily temperatures are nearing 90 degrees, and the humidity is in the range of what our local meteorologists call, “muggy”!
As we begin the summer months, we completed our 80th graduation liturgy for Resurrection Catholic School on May 28, 2024. On June 3, 2024, we began our summer enrichment program for our students and other young people who might otherwise have a summer filled only with TV and video games. These youngsters will learn and receive nutritious meals each day, despite our governor’s refusal to accept monies the United States Congress passed with bipartisan majorities to meet this need for millions of school children across our country.
On June 5, 2024, we welcomed students from Bellarmine College Prep in San Jose, California and on June 13, 2024 we hosted more than 40 staff and volunteers from the Diocese of Cleveland, Ohio’s Catholic Charities Offices. The Bellarmine and Cleveland groups are but two examples of the dozen or more Catholic schools, colleges and organizations we host as they volunteer with us and tour the abundance of civil rights and justice sites here in Montgomery.
The food pantry we operate in collaboration with a local food bank sees a steady stream of clients as hunger does not abate during the summer and the costs of groceries are still higher than many can afford. One of our maintenance staff has planted a vegetable garden near our offices so we can add even more quality, healthy items to the fine fare we get from the food bank.
These are just a few of the ministries and tasks that will keep us busy this summer. We could not do any of this without the support of partners like you. Your gifts help us not only maintain our programs but also maintain the buildings and facilities we use to meet these and so many other needs.
Amid your summer activities, I ask you to remember us, to make a gift to us. Your support of whatever size makes all the difference. We depend on them, and we depend on your prayers. In gratitude for your support past and present I have asked a special group of children who had their First Holy Communion in the Mission Church a few weeks ago to pray for you and all your intentions! I think these little ones have a direct line to the Lord.
Thanks for your support and may these summer days be filled with blessings for you and all those you love!
Gratefully,
Father Manuel Williams, C.R.
Mission Director
Please make a gift to help Resurrection through the “hazy lazy” days of summer!
