Pentecost is traditionally seen as the beginning of the Church in part because of the Holy Spirit’s abiding presence in the community of disciples, the Church, and in the hearts of every believer. It is also seen as the Church’s beginning because on that day in Jerusalem all the people of the then known world were present. People of every race and tongue! On this Pentecost evening we celebrate the gift of African American culture and history to the Church in this land. As Pope St John Paul II said at Xavier University of Louisiana during his visit to the United States the Church needs your gift of Blackness!
The following video, featuring the remarks of our own Milton Carver Davis, was produced after the Montgomery deanery hosted the November 2018 Black Catholic History Celebration.
