The 2019 Resurrection Collegiate Volunteer Program continues, and we were pleased last week to welcome our second and third groups of students from St. John’s University in Jamaica, New York and Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts.
The St. John’s University group included employee leaders Robert Bland, Joanne Carroll, and Angela Seegel and participants Cristina Artis, Jazzmin Ballou, Kendall Clark, Joliz Claudio, Amanda DeLisi, Chelsea Donohue, Rosalyna Felix, Elvira Garcia, Abiola Giwa, Nia E. Hulse, Anisha Johnson, Kyanna Johnson, Samantha Llanos, Karina Mendez, Tamia Morris, Kendra Patrick, Amber Reese, Sam Scala, Jalisa Smith, and Alana Woffard.
During their week at Resurrection, the 20 students from St. John’s University – our second largest group to date – performed invaluable service work across our campus in the school, parish, and administrative center – which included working with the Eagles of RCS and the seniors assisted by our Interfaith Community Outreach (ICO) program. The students also had the opportunity to discover more of Montgomery’s rich cultural and civil rights history through visits to the Freedom Rides Museum and the Civil Rights Memorial Center. In addition, the students also had the opportunity to visit the EJI Legacy Museum and the Memorial for Peace & Justice and were able to hear firsthand accounts of the local evolution of civil and human rights at a related dinner Thursday evening.
The Wellesley College group included two staff leaders and eight students, who stopped at Resurrection to spend their part of their southern civil rights tour here in Montgomery.
During their short time here, the women of Wellesley had the opportunity to visit Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and to visit the EJI Legacy Museum and Memorial Center. The group also visited nearby Selma before traveling to Atlanta on Tuesday.
As #RCVP2019 continues and the Resurrection Collegiate Volunteer Program continues to grow, we are so grateful for the service-minded students who visit our campus and city each year and enjoy doing our part to ensure that these young people receive and experience the best we have to offer.
